Who we are

Sahay Solar Association is a non-profit initiative and was founded by a group of private individuals with the common aim to support the distribution of solar energy on the African continent. Both our board and our members pool have many years of experience in the fields of renewable and solar energy, teaching, project development & management and start-up companies and together have successfully implemented numerous projects with regard to solar energy on different levels.
Sahay Solar Association understands itself as a modern, not-for-profit organization and aims to generate the greatest possible value on ecological, social and economic levels in Africa. Since 2008, we have been working in close cooperation with the Arba Minch University (AMU) in Ethiopia as well as the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI) and have the privilege to be supported by various private and institutional sponsors.

 

Ruedi Tobler, born 1940 in Winterthur/Switzerland, is a former marketing consultant to the Swiss Ministry of Energy in the field of renewable energies and energy efficiency. For many years, he has been a partner of various architectural projects with solar or geothermal energy usage and organizer of trade fair events at SWISSBAU Basel with renewable energies. Ruedi strongly believes in a clean energy future worldwide and is co- founder and chairman of Sahay Solar Association Switzerland.


 
Alexandra Kellermann-Freytag, born 1975 in Basel/Switzerland, has gathered experience in numerous architectural and solar projects. She has been working in close collaboration with Ruedi Tobler for the past 17 years, focusing on the marketing of environmentally-friendly and resource-efficient building projects. Alexandra is a board member of the Swiss Sahay Solar Association and runs donation events as well as taking care of media and PR activities.

 
Roger Buser, born 1968 in Basel/Switzerland, is a certified electrical engineer. He teaches electrical technicians at professional school level and at the University of Lucerne, focusing on solar technology. Roger is a board member of Sahay Solar Association Switzerland and develops and runs solar trainings at Arba Minch University’s Solar Competence Center (AMU SCC).  
Amelie Pohl, born 1983 in Hamburg/Germany, holds a Bachelor in Human Geography and a Master in Communication and Cultural Management. She has been working in the non-profit sector focusing on communication and public relations. Amelie is a founding board member of Sahay Solar Association in Germany and is responsible for all communication and PR-related tasks.  
Max Pohl, born 1983 in Stuttgart/Germany, holds a B.Sc. in Psychology from City University London as well as a Master’s degree in Economics & Management from Zeppelin University, Friedrichshafen. Fascinated by start-up companies and project development, he developed the concept of a social solar business in Ethiopia as part of his Master Thesis in 2008. After gaining professional experience in different industry and start-up jobs, Max co-founded Sahay Solar together with Ruedi Tobler and is the chairman of the German association. He works as a consultant in the renewable energy sector and on the realization of the social business idea in Germany, Switzerland and Ethiopia.  
Guluma Megersa, born 1985 in Debre Zeit/Ethiopia, moved to Germany at the age of 9. After graduating as an industrial engineer at the Mittelhessen University of Applied Sciences, he completed a Master’s degree at the University of Kassel, specializing in renewable energies and energy efficiency. Guluma Megersa works as a business development and technical sales manager for eastern Africa at SMA, a leading global specialist for photovoltaic system technology. He is a founding board member and vice chairman of Sahay Solar Association Germany and acts as technical consultant for our training and solar projects in Ethiopia.
